-
Chondroepiphysis
(CE)
- Cartilage end of long bone beneath articular
cartilage.
-
Diaphysis
- Shaft of long bone.
-
Dyschondroplasia
- Focal failure of endochondral ossification, composed
of unmineralized, poorly vascularized cartilage. Lesion
has a normal growth plate band with persistence of a
population of transitional cells in the metaphysis.
-
Epiphyseal
vessels
- Nutrient supply to growth plate band.
-
Growth
plate
- Area of specialization at ends of long bone allowing for sustained
growth in length until sexual maturity. Composed of distinct zones of
proliferating, transitional and hypertrophied cells producing cartilage
lattice work on which bone forms. (See general info in Wheeless'
Textbook of Orthopaedics).
-
-
Growth
plate band (GPB)
- Band of proliferating and transitional cells of
growth plate.
-
-
Hypertrophic
Cartilage (CC)
- Spicules of hypertrophied chondrocytes with
associated extracellular matrix between vascular
tunnels.
-
Metaphysis
- Trabecular bone lattice arising from endochondrial
ossification.
-
Metaphyseal
Vessels
- Eroded, invading cartilage.
-
None
Present
- Not observed in this condition.
-
Periosteum
- Connective tissue envelope covering cortical
bone.
-
-
Physis
- The growth area of the bone near the end.
-
Proliferating
Cartilage
- The location in which bone length is created by
active growth of cartilage cells.
-
Rickets
- Generalized failure of endochondrial ossification with lack of mineralization
of the epiphyseal cartilage matrix and poor vascular invasion. (See
general info in Wheeless'
Textbook of Orthopaedics).
-
- ...Vitamin D and/or Ca++ deficiency Rickets
- Elongation of growth plate band with poor differentiation of proliferating
cells, increase unmineralized organic matrix (osteoid) and poor
remodeling of CC. (See general info in Wheeless'
Textbook of Orthopaedics).
-
- ...Phosphorus Deficiency and or Ca++ Excess
Rickets
- Normal growth plate band and failure of remodeling
of cartilage columns and relatively normal vascular
invasion.
Tibial Dyschondroplasia (TD)
-
Vascular Invasion of Cartilage
